Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual CEO John Smith to Receive Leadership Award at Independence Gala
The Insurance Society of Philadelphia (ISOP) has announced that Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company’s (PLM) CEO John K. Smith, will be this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award. The ceremony will take place at their Independence Gala on Wednesday, November 14 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
John has been CEO of PLM since 2004, and under his leadership PLM has grown to be the largest mutual wood insurer in the country. His dedication to PLM, the insurance and wood industries and his community are just a few of the reasons why our CEO deserves this honor.
He has served on a number of Board of Directors including the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC), the Insurance Society of Philadelphia (ISOP), the Board of the Western Hardwood Association (WHA) and the Board of the Firemen’s Hall Museum in Philadelphia. He is a past Chairman of the Pennsylvania Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and currently serves as a trustee on the Griffith Insurance Educational Leadership Council and The Institutes Board.
In 1994 the Greater New York Council of Insurance Brokers recognized John as their Man of the Year. He has also been recognized for his life time commitment to education by the Insurance Education Foundation and by NAMIC for service to that organization. In 2013 John was made an Honorary Fire Chief of the Union Fire Company and was awarded the Insurance Society of Philadelphia’s 2014 Mariellen Whelan “Excellence in Education” Award. The Boy Scouts of America have honored John with a District Merit Award and their Silver Beaver Award.
ISOP has been a leader in the insurance industry for over 115 years. Dating back to 1901, the nonprofit organization is dedicated to the development of the insurance industry. ISOP also works with several community groups, such as the Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee and the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF), to support the Philadelphia region through various initiatives.
Every year ISOP hosts the Independence Gala as an opportunity to celebrate the insurance industry and give back to the community. The proceeds from the Gala support both ISOP and a scholarship fund dedicated to local college students. Representatives from top insurance companies in the area and out-of-state attend this event annually, making the gala an excellent networking opportunity, as well as an evening for charity.
A highlight of the event is the prestigious Distinguished Leadership Award. ISOP gives this annual award to a local executive who has demonstrated strong leadership, a dedication to the development of the insurance industry and who serves as a great presence in his or her community. We’re proud John Smith has been named this year’s recipient. During his tenure at PLM, he has demonstrated both the insurance industry leadership and charitable commitment the award recognizes.
