INSURANCE MARKETPLACE – Challenges Ahead
In a recent article on PropertyCasualty360, PLM President and CEO John K. Smith discusses the state of the current insurance market for carriers and other insurance professionals.
“It’s difficult to recall a time when we’ve seen quite so many pressures colliding — inflation, social inflation, supply chain interruptions, talent shortages, reinsurance issues, and of course, the weather,” says Smith.
However, the lumber and building materials industries have continued to perform well and still present opportunities. Even still, insurance professionals are not seeing as aggressive of a market as they may have in the past several years.
John Smith notes how many can work together and continue to help the insurance industry:
- Attract New Talent – continuing to bring young people into insurance helps our entire industry
- Focus on Loss Control – helping policyholders do better helps all others involved; encourage insureds to follow through with training programs and using risk management tools and tactic available to them
- Hold to Strict Underwriting Standards – make sure the right coverages are in place and carefully explained to insureds; Insurance-To-Value and Business Interruption are particularly important in the current needs and timeframes happening today
LOSS CONTROL – OSHA Expands Combustible Dust Program
Mentioned recently in this HBSDEALER article, “the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued a revised Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program (NEP) to continue OSHA inspections of facilities that generate or handle combustible dusts likely to cause fire, flash fire, deflagration and explosion hazards.”
Some PLM Loss Control representatives have reached out to accounts concerning this OSHA update noting that some could be targeted for regulatory compliance, including lumber resawing, planing, and truss manufacturers – among others. If you’re working with similar clients and they are insured with PLM, make sure they’re aware of these important changes.
