At the end of 2023, William F. Johnson, Jr., VP of Underwriting, retired after 22 years with PLM. Since joining the company in November 2001, he has served in a number of key roles throughout his tenure. Starting in the role as Underwriting Manager, he was promptly promoted to AVP in Underwriting in 2003.
Shortly thereafter, Bill became the unofficial mentor to the underwriting team and extended PLM family on coverage forms and complicated underwriting issues. His wealth of knowledge on technical issues and ability to explain their application in simple terms was top notch and amongst the best available in the insurance industry.
A natural when it comes to interacting with customers and brokers, Bill has spoken at numerous PLM seminars and training sessions and has visited many of our large clients, forming a bond of mutual respect. This unique quality positioned PLM to compete in the marketplace for both new and renewal business that we would have otherwise lost to the competition. He is heavily relied on by underwriting, sales, claims and senior leadership for this expertise.
A graduate of Mt. Saint Mary’s University in Maryland, over his career, Bill has worked for several large commercial insurance companies in an underwriting capacity, including Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association (Underwriting Manager) and USF&G (Insurance Director).
Born in Maryland, Bill has resided in Bel Air, Maryland for the past 27+ years and has been dedicated to his job and his love of Maryland, as he has commuted from Maryland to Philadelphia for his entire career at PLM.
Late in the year, PLM celebrated Bill on his retirement with his colleagues and family in attendance.
We thank Bill for his loyalty, dedication, and commitment to PLM, our customers, and brokers. His advice, guidance, and leadership, along with his deep knowledge of the insurance coverages, business, and players has been instrumental in helping re-shape and advance the entire organization and will be greatly missed.
