For many, the holiday season ushers in positive spirits, selflessness, and generosity, but it also brings out scammers who seek to use your good spirits against you. Poor security practices are what cyber criminals look for the most during the holiday season. So, as you’re out shopping, giving, volunteering, or whatever your traditions are, keep your guard up, and spread the news that criminals and scammers get into the spirit, too.
Some ways to avoid holiday headaches caused by scammers include the following:
If possible, avoid using debit cards to make purchases and opt for credit cards instead. Most credit card companies offer fraud protection that covers any fraudulent charges should your card be lost or stolen. If you must get cash from an ATM, choose one that’s physically inside a bank and inspect machines thoroughly for card skimmers.
- Some stores advertise their best deals as only available in store, therefore drawing massive crowds. If you join them, make sure to keep situational awareness. Make sure to keep an eye on your belongings and know where your exits are inside the store.
- For those shopping from the comfort of home, Cyber Monday and other holiday-related online deals provide great discounts with great convenience. However, these sales are also convenient for cybercriminals who set up fake websites to steal your info or sell inferior products. Make sure to only use recognizable websites, and always verify the URL before entering any personal info.
Remember if something seems too good to be true it is most likely a scam. Reputable sellers won’t offer highly expensive products for pennies on the dollar. Make sure to use common sense and avoid giving out personal details to secure discounts or enter drawings for free prizes. These can sometimes be fraudulent attempts to steal info. Also beware of any offers that you receive via email or text which come from merchants you don’t recognize. The offer could be real, but it could also be a phishing attack.
Always think before you click!
