Woodworking Shop
Woodworking shops create wood products, but often on a smaller and more local scale than light manufacturing. From wooden frame makers to turning or carving, these shops create individual products for sale.
Examples of who we protect:
- 1-Person Woodworking Shops
- Wood Carving and Wood Turning
- Wood Novelties Manufacturing
- Other Smaller Wood Products
Building Material Dealer / Lumberyard
With their materials obtained from the mills, these retail and wholesale operations often serve as suppliers of wood and other building supplies to local contractors, light manufacturing / woodworking operations, and consumers. Additionally, some dealers provide a wide range of building materials other than lumber, such as millwork, roofing, drywall, electrical and plumbing supplies.
Examples of who we protect:
- Building Material Dealers
- Lumberyards
- Masonry Yards
- Electrical, Plumbing or Drywall Suppliers
- Lumber Brokers and Distributors
Notable Hazards:
- Personal safety is important, especially with the loading/unloading of heavy materials and with mobile machines in use, such as forklifts
- Retail environments require special attention from trip and fall hazards
- Businesses can suffer losses related to contractors performing work on their behalf – contractual risk transfers, hold harmless agreements and additional insured certificates need to be carefully managed
Commercial Vehicles & Fleets
Many businesses use vehicles for their operations, from one or two trucks to large commercial fleets. PLM provides specific casualty insurance tailored to various businesses’ commercial auto needs. Our expert Loss Control department offers consultative services and fleet reviews to help create fleet management policies and safety programs.
We also offer educational materials for fleet safety and partner with leading industry providers in continuous MVR monitoring for drivers, distracted driving mobile protection, and comprehensive telematics solutions for insureds.
Note: PLM is not a market for mono-line commercial trucking operations. Continue along the map to find other segments of the wood niche that PLM protects!
Home Builders and Contractors
As found on frame construction sites, builders and contractors use wood materials on their jobsites obtained from lumberyards and other suppliers. Unfortunately, construction sites and builders/contractors are not currently part of the PLM appetite.
While we may not yet have a solution at this time for this type of client, our in-house brokerage and program specialist Green Tree Risk Partners is always looking for new ways to help those in the lumber and related communities.
Continue along the map to read about where they source their materials and how we can help keep them in business!
Light Manufacturing
Unlike sawmill-type operations, light manufacturing (also called secondary manufacturing) processes dimensional lumber received from the mills, producing finished wood products or wood components. These include everything from large, wood products manufacturing, moulding & millwork to cabinet manufacturers or wood flooring. If they manufacture with wood and make sawdust – they probably fit here.
Examples of who we protect:
- Cabinet Making and Manufacturing
- Box & Crate Manufacturing
- Countertop Manufacturing
- Fence Manufacturing
- Furniture Manufacturing
- Laminated Wood Products
- Moulding & Millwork
- Stair Manufacturer
- Flooring Manufacturer
- Concentration Yards & Wood Drying (Kilns)
Notable Hazards:
- Some finishing chemicals and adhesives are highly flammable, requiring proper storage, ventilation and disposal
- Possible ignition sources, like space heaters near oily rags, can lead to fire
- Improper dust control and collection, such as irregular housekeeping, can increase chance of losses
- Combustible wood dust can explode under pressure without specialized filtration and collection systems
Sawmills & Heavy Manufacturing
It all starts here (for PLM)! Sawmills are where logs are graded for quality and converted into useful dimensional lumber of various sizes. Some may be individual portable sawmills, but many can be found as large, heavy operations and manufacturers. This is sometimes also known as primary manufacturing. If logs are being processed, it probably belongs in this category.
Examples of who we protect:
- Hardwood or Softwood Sawmills
- Pallet Manufacturing
- Veneer Manufacturer
- Barrel Manufacturing (Cooperage)
- Plywood Manufacturing
- Log Home Manufacturer
- Portable Sawmills
Notable Hazards:
- Combustible wood dust can explode under pressure without specialized filtration and collection systems
- Poor housekeeping without a regular maintenance plan can lead to the buildup of hazardous sawdust
- Hot work maintenance (welding, cutting and grinding) can allow unattended sparks to grow into a full blaze
- Electrical system deficiencies along with wood dust adds to chance of fire
- Stock and materials stacked too high or close to buildings can cause further losses or injuries
Standing Timber and Logging Operations
Logging operations and timber harvesting are important to the wood industry, but have not always been part of the PLM appetite and finding the right coverages for these operations can be difficult.
With the Green Tree Logging Program through Green Tree Risk Partners (our in-house brokerage and program specialist), we try to find a solution to help protect loggers with industry leading insurance carriers, PLM and and other insurance partners. Note: not currently available in all states, see GTRP site for details.
